Windows Key rcalc

April 24th, 2008 John View Comments

rcalcFile this one under “Things that drives one batty”. One of the things I really like about Vista is the ability to open any installed application without having to drill through a ton of menu selections. By simply pressing the Windows key I can start typing the name of the application and usually within 3 or 4 keystrokes I can hit enter and run the application. Talk about a time saver! This is possible because of Vista’s powerful indexing service. It’s also easy to find documents as well as multimedia files. It’s a tremendous tool.

There is a downside, however, and it gets me every time I try and bring up the calculator (thus the image). I’ve been on XP so long that it’s in my muscle memory to hit Windows Key+R to get the Run dialog box to come up and then type ‘calc’ in the field. Nearly every time I run the calculator this happens to me. The same thing happens when I want to bring up the command prompt. Anything I did that was previously associated with the Run box trips me up. I guess old habits die hard.

How to attend a conference

April 15th, 2008 John View Comments

I’m currently at a conference for work. There are a few things that really bug me about attending conferences. I’ll list them first and then expand upon each topic.

  1. In this instance, it’s too big.
  2. It’s expensive.
  3. Too many overlapping topics during sessions.
  4. Presenters either run too long or too short.
  5. Often there is no detailed information provided.
  6. You’re expected to keep up with work duties while at the conference.
  7. You’re not held accountable for the content of the conference.

On the road

I’m on the road in CA so the recording quality isn’t the best in this episode, especially since the headset mic dropped out in the middle of the recording. I review 2 movies from Visionary Pictures, Director’s Cut and Forgive Me. Both were written by Chris Vander Kaay of The Studio Upstairs podcast. Links to the news stories I covered are below:

Reviewed by Church 2.0 Blog

April 9th, 2008 John View Comments

Church 2.0 - the blogMy podcast was reviewed by the Church 2.0 Blog. Thanks for noticing!

Jesus Geek: THREE 1/2 out of FIVE Stars. Good stuff… big props for keeping your daily episodes to 10mins. It’s very difficult to deliver a daily episode and still have good content. 9 times out of 10 the Jesus Geek delivers. The only comment I have to the Jesus Geek is you need a tighter niche market.

I was reviewed back when I was posting daily podcasts which is no longer the case. Kez suggests that that I tighten my niche. What do you think? Should I drop the news and stick to tutorials and technology implementations? Perhaps I should just do a series of posts like the Godcasting 101 series and flesh it out a little more. Leave me some feedback.

Site Redesign Coming

April 8th, 2008 John View Comments

I will be redesigning the site in the coming weeks. I’m planning to use a 3-column layout. The reason for this change is because I’m starting to introduce advertising on the site. I want the ads to be “above the fold” because it’s been shown to increase “click-through rates“. There’s also other information I want towards the top and it can’t all fit up there in a 2-column layout, thus the change. Please bear with me as I make these changes. There should be no interruption in the delivery of the podcast as this is just a cosmetic change.
