346276main_massimino_226In this week’s podcast I talk about my plans for the Summer.

I’ll start releasing podcasts bi-weekly starting in June on the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month until September. I may extend that through September depending upon how my Summer goes.

I also talk about the “Summer of Porn” where I’ll be interviewing people about pornography on the Internet, how it affects people and what can be done to get free from a pornography addiction.

Along those lines, I also talk about Covenant Eyes for Windows Mobile.

I play a promo for the Totally Cool Tech Daily Podcast hosted by Norbert Davis and Archangel: Legion by Scott Roche. I also heap praise upon CleanCasts.com

Covenant Eyes for Windows Mobile

May 13th, 2009 John View Comments

Covenant Eyes is now available for Windows Mobile devices. The best part about it is that if you’re already a CE subscriber it’s free.

As more and more people use mobile devices to access the Internet the ability to view pornography on those devices is obviously a temptation. Now there’s a mobile solution to keep you accountable for what you’re viewing on your mobile device.

Covenant Eyes the gold-standard in accountability software and if you’re already a subscriber and have a Windows Mobile device, why not take advantage of this great tool?

This program is Windows Mobile certified, and it works about the same way Covenant Eyes works on a PC: it runs as a background process, monitors where you go online, and then stores and categorizes your browsing information in our servers. All of this information will be compiled into easy-to-read accountability reports that are sent to a friend or a group of friends you choose.

CE for Windows Mobile goes a step further and also blocks the use of Opera Mini and Skyfire. These two browsers use a secure proxy and the connections cannot be monitored.

iPhone and iPod Touch users, fear not. CE is also working to develop a version for your device as well.

If you haven’t tried Covenant Eyes yet, you can get a free 30-day trial by using the promo code ‘Jesusgeek’ when you download it. Click the Covenant Eyes logo on the right to start your 30-day trial now and experience the best of class in accountability software. You won’t regret it.

National Day of Prayer

May 7th, 2009 John View Comments

ndopAt 12PM EST I hosted a conference call to pray for our nation. Paul encouraged us to pray for our leaders in 1 Timothy 2:1,2 so that we could “lead a peaceful and quiet life.”

President Harry Truman first declared a national day of prayer in 1952. In 1988, President Reagan signed a resolution in 1988 to observe the National Day of Prayer each year on the first Thursday in May. This year’s declaration was introduced on May 4, 2009 under HR 397 and was sponsored by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA).

Thanks to everyone who was able to participate. One other person participated on the call with me and there were others who listened in via a live stream at http://live.jesusgeek.info.

Thanks to Brad and Faith McFadden for providing a forum to plan the event.

If you could not attend I’ve provided the audio (edited) from the conference call.

Please note that if you are a regular subscriber to the podcast this will not appear in the feed.

Promo Palooza!

May 5th, 2009 John View Comments

This ad-free show features promos from all the podcasts I listen to (if I could find their promo) as well as all the podcasts in the Christian New Media Group. There is some bonus content in the middle to break up the monotony of listening to promo after promo.

This has really caused me to re-evaluate the location of my promo. What do you think? Is it easy to find?

Are you a podcaster? Didn’t get your promo played? Did I miss it on your website? Let me know where it is and I’ll play it in a future episode.

Promos played (in no particular order):

These are shows I listen to but could not find a promo:

Long forgotten – The Drive-In Movie Theater

May 5th, 2009 John View Comments

drivein3This past weekend I went to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine with my son at a nearby drive-in movie theater. That’s right, a drive-in movie theater. If you grew up in the late 70s and early 80s you have probably been to one of these classic venues before they all but disappeared. The drive-in movie theater offers you a unique experience and if there is one nearby, you should try and get to one at least once during the Summer.

Drive-ins let you see movies on a big screen, a really big screen. With the dawn of multiplexes, theater screens have been getting smaller and smaller. Not so with the drive-in. These screens are huge and the images are larger than life, literally.

If you’re a penny-pincher like I am, drive-ins are more affordable, too. You get 2 movies for the price of one if you choose to stay for the double-feature. Even if you only watch one movie it’s still cheaper than going to the mall. A brief survey I’ve conducted shows that the price of admission is about $1-$2 cheaper than the multiplex for adults and the concessions are cheaper too. Some drive-ins charge a “tax” if you bring your own food, which is understandable. At the drive-in I go to regularly, if you bring your own food you’re only charged $5 per car. Bring your grill and have some burgers and dogs during the film.

You also get to enjoy the movie at your own volume since many use FM transmitters for the film’s audio. No thunderous booms coming from the neighboring theaters or audio that’s too loud or soft. Some drive-ins still offer the nostalgic squawk boxes that hang from your window if you want to go really retro.

Drive-ins in my opinion are more comfortable too. If you’re not comfortable in your car you can always bring along a lawn chair to chillax in rather than the stinky, sticky chairs you find in theaters. Got a pick-up truck? Back that puppy up and sit in the bed for an even nicer view. The staff at the drive-in is very conscious of larger vehicles and will even ask if your view is blocked by that SUV in front of you. If some freakishly tall person sits in front of you in a regular theater, you’re stuck. Have fun looking around their huge head.

Granted, there are some down sides to the drive-in. There’s always some inconsiderate person who turns on their headlights during the movie or stomps the brake in front of you. Occasionally someone will drive in front of your view but it’s only for a moment. If it starts to rain your picture is ruined but most drive-ins do offer rain checks in the case of really bad weather.

I think that overall the drive-in experience is exponentially better than going to the multiplex. Being involved in a time-honored tradition of blowing your horn to get the movie started and grilling before the start of the movie is a great way to spend some quality time with the family.
