WordPress for Blackberry
If you’re on the go a lot and want to be able to quickly update your blog because you saw something that needs more than 140 to describe then WordPress for Blackberry is the app you’re looking for.
WordPress for Blackberry allows you to have access to your blog and post a new article or update an existing one. You can even attach a photo or video to your post (more on that later). You can tag your posts appropriately, even create a new one. Additionally, you can add an excerpt for mega-SEO goodness. Also included is a spell-checker which I’ve found to be quite useful because my thumbs occasionally get crossed. Interestingly, the spell-checker doesn’t recognize ‘WordPress’. Comment moderation is also possible. WordPress for Blackberry gives you the option of saving your post locally (on your Blackberry) or uploading it to your blog for review, as a draft, private or published post. It doesn’t, however, allow you to schedule a post (something I find frustrating).
The best feature of WordPress for Blackberry is the ability to attach photos and video to your post (3GP is not supported by WordPress so I don’t understand the point of this option 3GP is now supported in the 1.0 version). See something cool happening? Take a picture and quickly have it posted on your blog. No need to configure a 3rd-party plug-in or app to have it post automatically and then go back and edit the post because it got munged. You can resize your photos down to 640×480 to speed up your post. Images and videos can only be placed at the top or bottom of your post and you cannot use a thumbnail with images. More resizing options or the ability to upload and link to a thumbnail would make this a truly powerful app.
All-in-all, WordPress for Blackberry makes updating your blog a breeze and I highly recommend it. If your posts appear in a column that’s narrower than 640 pixels, you may want to avoid posting photos. The only features missing are the ability to add hyperlinks and schedule your posts. WordPress for Blackberry is a solid app and every blogger with a Blackberry should be using it. WordPress is also available on the iPhone.
Finally, yes, this entire post was originally composed using my Blackberry (with the exception of the images) and uploaded as a draft. I did make a few other minor changes (like this one) before finally publishing this article.
Note: I’m aware that the 1.0 version has now been released and there are some significant changes. I will provide a 2nd review once I’ve had time to thoroughly run it through its paces.
